Hawaii allows its four counties to decide whether to elect or appoint a prosecuting attorney and whether to hold partisan or nonpartisan elections. A fifth county, Kalawao County, does not have a prosecuting attorney due to low population. Elected prosecuting attorneys serve four-year terms.
